WorkSafe Washington updates Ergonomics Risk Assessment app

App provides short, self-paced training modules on safe lifting techniques

WorkSafe Washington, a Washington State workplace safety incentive program providing free resources, recently launched its new-and-improved Ergonomics Risk Assessment app.

ErgoApp was developed as a preventative method to classify risk level when performing a task at work. The app encourages workers to practice proper lifting techniques and prevent back injuries.

The app was updated in May 2026. Users can download the latest version for Android from the Google Play Store and for iOS through the Apple Store.

App can be integrated into existing training workflows

The WA WorkSafe program is supported by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), State Safety and Health Investment Projects (SHIP) Grant Program, the Washington Retail Association, and Carlson Sheet Metal.

ErgoApp was developed by the University of Washington with a SHIP grant, according to releases issued to the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business.

It offers short training modules that workers can review at their own pace to ensure they are practicing and using property lifting postures and techniques.

The Washington Retail Association encourages employers to consider integrating the app into their enterprise’s ongoing safety programs, new employee onboarding, refresher training, or injury prevention efforts.

“Helping employees recognize ergonomic risks before injuries occur benefits everyone,” the Association said. “Fewer injuries can lead to improved productivity, reduced claims costs, and a safer workplace culture.”

The association said back injuries remain one of the most common and costly injuries across retail, warehousing, distribution, and automotive.

All WA Worksafe resources are free

All WA WorkSafe resources are free, and include:

  • Accident Prevention Program (APP) - Employers are required to have an APP at each one of their locations. The new eAPP online Accident Prevention Program - launched in May 2025 - makes it easier for employers to maintain compliance with L&I rules.
  • SAFEME online safety training courses - Provides current employees and job applicants with streamlined, understandable courses on basic workplace safety for both general workplaces and automotive.
  • OneSource Return to Work (RTW) - This application makes it easy for employers, employees and attending providers to understand the financial, emotional, and psychological benefits of a return to work and how easy the process can be. This tool lets involved parties stay coordinated and on track to the desired outcome.
  • Class 4 Laser Welding and Cleaning Safety Program - Provides standard operating procedures (SOPs), job hazard analysis (JHA) forms, laser safety checklists, and guidance to help welding shops and metal cleaning operations develop effective laser safety and training programs.
