Advanced Machine & Engineering (AME) recently introduced its RCHX Exclusion series of hydraulically-driven rod locks designed specifically for harsh conditions and submersible applications.

When it comes to reliable and safe machine operation in severe environments, having the right components can make a significant difference. RCHX is a modified version of the original AMLOK RCH slide lock, re-engineered to withstand the most demanding applications.

Zero displacement, equal holding power in both tension and compression

The RCHX Exclusion Series is designed to withstand challenges in extreme environments, ensuring equipment stays both safe and operational under tough conditions.

Features include:

  • Rugged, heavy-duty steel construction - Precision-machined heavy-duty steel body built to endure the rigors of demanding applications, with corrosion resistance for long-term reliability
  • Oil-filled housing design - Provides superior lubrication and protection against contaminants, ensuring long-term reliability. Dual rod wipers and seals protect internal components from abrasive contaminants, extending service life.
  • Holds forces equally in both directions - Offers consistent performance whether the force is applied in the forward or reverse direction, equally in both tension and compression
  • High clamp force in a compact design - Delivers holding power in a space-efficient package
  • No rod displacement on engagement - Ensures precise positioning and eliminates rod movement when the lock is activated. Locks immediately without shifting the rod position, ensuring precision and accuracy.
  • Failsafe operation - Automatically engages via disc springs when hydraulic pressure is lost and releases upon pressure restoration
  • Proximity indication - Integrated proximity switch port clearly signals unlock status, enhancing operational safety.
  • Through-hole construction profile - Compatible with standard National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) cylinder mounts, making it versatile for various setups
  • Standalone mounting option - Can be mounted independently on a separate guide rod for more flexible installation

The RCHX Series employs a mechanical spring-loaded mechanism to immediately engage a robust locking collet onto the cylinder rod when hydraulic pressure is lost. Internally lubricated, lip-type piston seals ensure effective sealing, reduced friction, and extended life. The oil-filled, sealed housing with rod-wiper systems further protects against harsh environmental conditions, making the RCHX ideal for demanding industrial and submersible applications.

Available options to customize the RCHX rod lock for specific environments and needs include:

  • Corrosion-resistant construction - Stainless steel or electroless nickel-plated housing for corrosive or washdown conditions
  • High-temperature seals - Viton seals for high temperatures and aggressive fluids
  • Environmental protections - Wipers/scrapers prevent contamination, fully sealed units for food processing, chemical, or underwater use
  • Tandem configuration - Dual RCH units can be mounted in tandem for double the holding capacity.

Marine, mining, heavy equipment, oil & gas applications

AME said the RCHX Exclusion Series rod lock is suitable for applications that demand reliable performance in extreme conditions. Its rugged design and advanced sealing technology make it ideal for industries such as:

  • Marine and Offshore: Resistant to water and corrosion, perfect for submersible equipment
  • Mining and heavy equipment: Withstands abrasive dust and heavy loads
  • Oil & Gas: Designed to endure harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures

The AMLOK RCH series is suited for any heavy-duty application where a hydraulic axis must be securely locked in place to prevent movement. Application examples include:

When precision, safety, reliability, and durability are non-negotiable, AME said its RCHX Exclusion series rod lock can deliver a combination of high clamp force, rugged construction, and innovative sealing to ensure equipment remains secure and operational no matter the conditions.
