NIOSH canceled its Black Lung screenings scheduled for July 28-30 at the 2026 National Mine Rescue Association (NMRA) Post No. 5 Contest at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.

The agency posted cancellation updates on its Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) pages July 27. NIOSH began promoting the screenings July 1.

NIOSH said additional screenings dates will be posted on its social media when they become available.

Coal miners are also encouraged to check the Coal Worker's Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) page, their mine plans, and watch for internal notices about upcoming screenings.

What’s included in a screening & how to schedule an appointment

The NIOSH CWHSP offers periodic black lung screenings at no cost to coal miners in the U.S.

NIOSH travels to coal mining regions across the U.S. and offers screenings through its mobile health unit. Miners can also visit NIOSH-approved facilities located in mining regions across the U.S.

NIOSH notifies miners when they are eligible to receive voluntary screenings, usually every five years during their mine’s scheduled six-month window. New coal miners and contractors are required to be examined within 30 days of starting work and again after 3 years.

Private 30-minute exams include:

  • Chest x-ray meeting MSHA’s 42 CFR Part 37 Specifications
  • Spirometry (breathing test)
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Work history
  • Health questionnaire

Screening results provide miners with information about their health and allow them to make informed decisions throughout their coal mining careers.

Coal miners can call 1-888-480-4042 or email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
