NHTSA recalls over 5,000 new USPS trucks for missing brake pin

All NGDVs recalled, brake pedal might not be attached

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled 5,242 of Oshkosh Defense’s Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) this month because the brake pedal might not be connected to the actuator rod.

NHTSA said a missing brake pedal mounting pin and retaining clip will not fully secure the brake actuator rod to the brake pedal. The brake actuator rod may, over time, separate from the brake pedal and impact the operation of the service brakes, increasing the risk of a crash.

Although the recall includes over 5,000 trucks, only 0.1% are estimated to be missing the pin and retaining clip.

The NGDV is the replacement for the U.S. Postal Service's Grumman Long Life Vehicles (LLVs), offered as both battery-electric and gas-powered variants.

Missing parts noticed in December

The NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report states Oshkosh received a report Dec. 10, 2025 that a vehicle in the field did not have a brake pedal mounting pin and retaining clip as part of the brake assembly.

In this instance, there was no information to indicate that there was any reduction in the performance of the service brake system and instructions were provided to USPS to properly install the missing parts and return the vehicle to service.

An investigation into this issue and possible root causes were initiated.

Brakes fail on new truck during operation

A report received Jan. 26 alleged a vehicle lost its service brake function. Oshkosh’s investigation of this incident determined that a brake pedal mounting pin and retaining clip were not present in the brake pedal assembly.

On Jan. 27, all in-process builds were quarantined at the truck manufacturing facility.

Oshkosh provided an inspection and repair procedure to USPS for the potentially-affected vehicles Jan. 29. The remedy will be provided at no charge.

On Feb. 2, the determination was made to conduct a safety recall to address this issue. There are no reports of crashes or injuries resulting from this issue.

Parts scanning added to verify brake pin installation

On Jan. 28, work instruction and production processes were changed. Verification of the installation of the brake pedal mounting pin and retaining clip are now performed via parts scanning.

Because Oshkosh sells the NGDV only to USPS and not through dealers, no dealer notification was provided. A letter was sent to USPS Feb. 16 notifying the operator of the issue.

According to The Brake Report, the recall includes all NGDVs produced.

2026 model year vehicles affected include:

  • 60 electric trucks produced between Apr. 16, 2024 and Jan. 27, 2026
  • 854 gas-powered trucks produced between Apr. 24, 2024 and Jan. 27, 2026

2025 model year vehicles affected include:

  • 764 electric trucks produced between Apr. 16, 2024 and Jan. 27, 2026
  • 3,564 gas-powered trucks produced between Apr. 16, 2024 and Jan. 27, 2026
