Embedded vision provider e-con Systems today launched its STURDeCAM57 designed for driver monitoring systems (DMS) and occupant monitoring systems (OMS).

The 5MP global shutter visible light and infrared (RGB-IR) GMSL2 camera is designed to deliver reliable, context-rich vision from day to night applications.

This new RGB-IR camera is based on an automotive-grade image sensor. STURDeCAM57 streams RGB and IR frames as independent channels, providing AI vision systems with both full-color imagery and high-contrast infrared data from a single camera.

It allows continuous monitoring across daylight, low-light, and no-light conditions without requiring multiple sensors. It is optimized for seamless integration with common platforms, including NVIDIA Jetson.

Host image processing frees up platform resources

E-con said a key differentiator of the STURDeCAM57 is its onboard Image Signal Processor (ISP) fine-tuned by e-con Systems. Unlike conventional approaches where RGB-IR processing is handled on the host, this ISP performs RGB-IR separation, demosaicing, and color reconstruction directly within the camera.

“Building vision systems that perform reliably from day to night often requires multiple sensors or mechanical IR-cut filter switching, increasing system complexity and integration effort,” said Suresh Madhu, e-con Systems mobility business unit head. “With STURDeCAM57, we address this by delivering both color-based context and infrared visibility from a single camera - without mechanical switching. This simplifies system design while enabling reliable, continuous vision across lighting conditions.”

The company said this functionality significantly removes dependency on host platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson, enabling systems to allocate more resources to AI inference and application processing.

Durable enclosure, built-in system health monitor

STURDeCAM57 integrates 940-nanometer IR illumination, combined with high quantum efficiency, ensuring reliable visibility in low-light and zero-light conditions.

Designed for real-world deployment, the camera features an IP67-rated enclosure and operates reliably across extreme temperatures from −40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

Stream health monitoring and recovery feature ensures uninterrupted camera streaming by continuously monitoring the health of the sensor, ISP, and GMSL link.

In addition to DMS, and OMS, e-con said STURDeCAM57 is also well suited for a range of 5MP global shutter vision applications, including industrial automation along with pick-and-place robotics.

Additional features

  • Simultaneous RGB and IR frame streaming for continuous operation
  • Global shutter for distortion-free capture of fast-moving scenes
  • Enhanced dynamic range for high-contrast environments
  • On-board automotive-grade ISP for RGB-IR processing
  • Compatible with NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin, Orin NX, and Orin Nano platforms
  • Supports evaluation with e-con Systems’ new AI Compute Box - Darsi PRO
  • GMSL2 interface supporting power and data transmission up to 50 feet
  • Optional support for FPD-Link IV interface
