MODEX 2026: NORD Drivesystems standardizes frequency inverter functional safety

Failsafe connectivity, design flexibility enabled

NORD Drivesystems recently announced its NORDAC LINK and NORDAC ON frequency inverters now have identical communication and safety functions.

The company also announced a new modular system comprising decentralized drive electronics and efficient motors that can provide system designers with increased flexibility for floor or wall mounting.

NORD exhibited its latest advancements in high-efficiency gear motors, intelligent electronic control products, and modular automation at MODEX 2026. The trade show was hosted by MHI April 13-16 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Option to design wall or floor mountings

NORD said intralogistics operations at e-commerce providers, parcel distribution centers, and airports can benefit from space-saving, decentralized drive solutions. However, planners often face challenges if frequency inverters for wall mountings or motor mountings have different safety and communication properties, requiring additional installations.

With its new modular system, NORD said it provides users with decentralized drive electronics for consistent use.

The modular system comprises the asynchronous IE3 and synchronous IE5+ motors from NORD, and two decentralized frequency inverters as the centerpiece: NORDAC ON in the power range from 0.37 to 3.7 kW for wall mounting and motor mounting, and NORDAC LINK for power ranges from 0.37 to 7.5 kW for wall mounting.

Both have identical communication and safety functions that have been extensively expanded by NORD.

Failsafe component systems integration

The frequency inverters feature onboard ethernet and are compatible with PROFINET and EtherCAT. Both NORDAC ON and NORDAC LINK can be integrated seamlessly into a failsafe application via PROFIsafe or FSoE.

An extended safety function package has already been integrated. STO and SS1-t (each in accordance with SIL3 / PLe) as well as SS1-r, SLS, SMS and SSM (each in accordance with SIL 2 / PLd) have no encoder.

Safe inputs and outputs allow failsafe components such as emergency stop buttons or photoelectric sensors to be connected directly.
