OSHA cited commercial truck parts distributor FleetPride Inc. this week for 19 safety violations after an employee asphyxiated while inspecting a tanker trailer in Corpus Christi, Texas.
According to a statement obtained by local news station KIII, FleetPride is reviewing OSHA's citations, has requested an informal settlement conference, and remains committed to working with the agency on reaching an appropriate resolution.
On Jan. 7, OSHA opened an inspection into the death of 63-year-old Juan Antonio Garza Jr., and found the company exposed workers to confined space and other safety hazards.
The agency cited FleetPride for 16 serious and three other-than-serious safety violations, which include:
OSHA has proposed $264,380 in penalties for the cited violations.
FleetPride said in its statement Garza’s death was "a profound tragedy" and the safety of its employees remains its top priority.
The company suspended all tank entry work across the company immediately after the incident and has not resumed those operations.
