MSHA releases millions in funds for mining safety and training

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that its Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is opening up $10.5 million in grant funding to states for them to provide mine safety training for U.S. miners.

“Through our ongoing commitment to safety training, we achieved a historically low all-injury rate for mining last year. This latest investment demonstrates that we’re doubling down on our efforts to protect our nation’s hardworking miners,” said Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling. “The Department of Labor will continue to put American miners first by keeping them safe on the job, which will help advance President Trump’s mission to bolster domestic mineral production.”

As part of the fiscal year 2026 State Grants Program, MSHA will make the grants available to cover the cost of federally mandated training and re-training for miners—specifically those who work at U.S. surface, underground coal, and metal and non-metal mines.

Eligilibity is open to state, tribal, and territorial governments. Through a state grant, MSHA can cover up to 80% of program expenses, and the grant recipient must pay for at least 20% of total program costs.

State training programs are viewed as a resource for mine safety, health training, and education, according to MSHA. Additionally, state programs are advised to take advantage of grant funds to offer training support for new and small mining operations, and to assist in states' health and safety training programs. 

Grantees can also build training compliance assistance programs to help operators working with minerals, such as coal, with a goal of advancing the discovery and mining of critical minerals, according to MSHA. Training on miners’ statutory rights is also recommended under the Mine Safety and Health Act.

Grant applications are due Aug. 10, 2026. Grant awards will be announced by Sept. 30, 2026.
